Volcanic rock 23 million years old. A sacred site since before Christ. And a forgotten yet still radiant power point on the planet today.
Morro Rock is the last of the Nine Sisters, a string of volcanic lava domes jutting out between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo. Named El Morro by the Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who believed the rock resembled the head of a moor, it stands 581 feet above the water and is made up of dacite, biotite, quartz, and glass among others. Resting proudly within Morro Bay, CA, it has been protected as a historical landmark in the state since 1968. But long pre-dating that it represented a deeply sacred site for two ancient tribes, and at present remains a magnetic attraction for a multitude of life to this day.
Rewind nearly 10,000 years. Settled along the paradise coast of California for generations, the Salinan People and Northern Chumash Tribe have lived in the area since roughly 6500 B.C…. Both tribes have worshipped Morro Rock in their culture and mythology as a sacred site.
Le’samo’ is the name given to the rock by the indigenous Salinan People. Central to no less than four of the tribe’s legends, the most well known story is The Legend of the Serpent. As told by Salinan Tribe member Maria Ocarpia, there was once a great snake which ate the Indians of the land. “The whirlwind was his protector and brought him food. Prairie-Falcon heard of him and said, ‘What shall we do?’ “.
“How many powers have you?” asked Raven.
“I have one so fast that the snake will not be able to catch me” said the Prairie-Falcon.
It goes on to say that “…they flew towards Morro with the snake in pursuit. He wrapped himself around the Morro from beneath and the allies seated themselves at the top. He had almost caught them when up jumped the Prairie-Falcon and seized his charm. With it he cut the snake into four pieces and killed him.”
But the ancient stone represents more to the Salinan People than where their great enemy was slain. Every summer and winter solstice, a ceremony is held at the rock. A handful of tribe members are selected to climb it in order to receive wisdom and blessings. As remarkable as this event is however, it does not occur without controversy.
The Chumash Tribe, guardians and caretakers of Morro Rock, have equally inhabited the area for thousands of years. It is officially recognized as an International Sacred Site for the ancient people. The Chumash believe the site to be so sacred that no one should ever set foot on it. And while the general public is prohibited from hiking the rock due to the dangers it poses, the Salinas are still able to practice there biannual solstice rituals. Not surprisingly, there has been ongoing lawsuits regarding which tribe the land belongs to. Despite their differences though, both tribes agree: Morro Rock is absolutely special.
Over the ensuing years the rock has stood as a land marker for lost sailors. It acted as a an Amphibious Training Base for the military during Pearl Harbor. And it was even mined for gold until 1963, further confirming that its energetic resonance is one of a higher vibration.
Together, the stone and bay exude a rare ambiance. Nestled in the sandy shores nearby, you feel almost shielded by their protective energy. Stay for any amount of time and you will notice, suddenly, as though the weight of the rock itself has been lifted from your shoulders, leaving you with an overwhelming sense of peace, clarity, and rejuvenation.
The question remains, is there still more about the powers of Morro Rock that we have been unable to decipher? As if it weren’t mysterious enough already, the bay has also had reports of UFO activity.
In 2015, two UFO’s were reported being seen in the Morro Rock area. Mrs. Boumaiz and her husband were strolling along the boardwalks of the bay late afternoon on March 28th when they looked up and witnessed something extraordinary.
“Oh my gosh, look! Do you see that?” her husband exclaimed.
Mr. and Mrs. Boumaiz proceeded to observe two metallic orbs in the sky moving in tandem with one another.
“When we first noticed them, they seemed so close to us because of how we could see them and their detail. We were stunned and our sight fixed on the objects quite in disbelief. Then they suddenly disappeared. They didn’t fade away or zoom off out of our sight, they just popped off… like a light switch.” Mrs. Boumaiz explained.
Another account was reported on November 20th of 2015. The anonymous viewer wrote, “Having coffee on my deck at about 5:40 AM. I observed an object rising up some distance out over the ocean. The object was rising slowly and pulsating. It began to ascend at an increasing rate, and as it did it started pulsating faster. The glowing increased the higher it climbed. Then, in a sudden flash, it shot directly upward in an indescribable acceleration only to disappear.”
This is not the first instance where unidentified flying objects have been seen near energetic power points. What is it about these places that draw life from all over the planet, and potentially life from other ones?
Today, life continues to bustle vibrantly all around the edifice. Sea lions and otters swim playfully in the surrounding bay, joining a myriad of other water creatures including starfish, mussels, hermit crabs, sea cucumbers, and small fish. Above the waters, several bird species live and vacate there, including the endangered peregrine falcon. And though not many can survive the harsh dry environment, kelp, sea grass, mosses, weeds, and lichen are among some of the plant species found around its surface.
Joining the wildlife, people from all over flock to the rock, bay and beach for leisure and activity alike. From surfing and kayaking to volleyball and tanning, the bay is bustling with locals and tourists capitalizing on the unique features of the area. And while this is good for fun, and for business, it seems as though something is missing.
Are we reaching our full potential when it comes to understanding our home in planet Earth? Or is there more to be done by modern society in order to reach a place of not only learning from the land, but giving to it as well? If we take more time to consider what deeper truths we can learn from the ancient ancestral wisdom, and the anomalous occurrences surrounding UFO sightings, perhaps we can understand more about ourselves, our history, and maybe our very evolution.
